Turkish Interior Minister Efkan Ala resigns

Turkish Interior Minister Efkan Ala has resigned, Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım announced on Wednesday, following an unscheduled meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Labor Minister Süleyman Soylu has replaced him, Yıldırım said.

The shift came at a time when the government is carrying out a big campaign against the followers of Fethullah Gülen after the July 15 coup attempt.

The Islamic State (IS) has also held several bomb attacks since last year, including the deadliest one in the country’s history.

New Interior minister Soylu joined the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in 2012 and served as a party deputy leader before entering the cabinet.

Former health minister Mehmet Müezzinoğlu has replaced Soylu’s seat.
